Hair Loss Evaluation

Hair loss can have many causes, such as genetics, hormones, stress, medications, infections, autoimmune diseases, and nutritional deficiencies. To find out the cause of your hair loss, we will perform a thorough evaluation that may include:

  • A detailed medical history and physical examination
  • Blood examinations are conducted to detect potential underlying ailments or irregularities
  • Scalp biopsy to examine the hair follicles and skin
  • Trichoscopy to magnify and analyze the hair and scalp
  • Hair pull test to measure the amount and type of hair shedding

Based on the results of the evaluation, we will diagnose the type and severity of your hair loss and recommend the best treatment options for you.

Male/female Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenic Alopecia)

Male or female pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss. By the time they reach 50 years old, approximately half of men and 40% of women are affected by this. It is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors that make the hair follicles shrink and produce thinner and shorter hairs over time. The pattern of hair loss usually starts at the temples and crown in men and the central parting in women.

There is no cure for male or female pattern hair loss, but there are treatments that can slow down or stop the progression and improve the appearance of the hair. These include:

  • Topical medications, such as minoxidil, stimulate hair growth and increase the diameter of the hair shafts
  • Oral medications, such as finasteride or spironolactone, block the action of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes hair follicle miniaturization
  • Low-level laser therapy uses red light to increase blood flow and cellular activity in the scalp and hair follicles
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections use your blood to deliver growth factors and cytokines to the hair follicles and stimulate hair growth

Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss that occurs when a large number of hair follicles enter the resting phase (telogen) and fall out after a few months. It is usually triggered by a stressful event or a change in the body, such as:

  • Illness, surgery, or infection
  • Pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause
  • Medications, such as antidepressants, blood thinners, or birth control pills
  • Diets, such as crash dieting, low protein intake, or iron deficiency
  • Emotional stress, such as grief, divorce, or trauma

Telogen effluvium is usually temporary and reversible, as the hair follicles resume their normal growth cycle after the triggering factor is resolved or removed. However, in some cases, it can become chronic and last for more than six months. To treat telogen effluvium, we will first identify and address the underlying cause of the hair loss. We may also prescribe supplements, such as biotin, zinc, or iron, to improve the quality and strength of the hair. In some cases, we may also recommend PRP injections to boost hair growth.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a concentrated solution of platelets and plasma derived from your blood. Platelets are the cells that help with clotting and healing, and plasma is the liquid part of the blood that contains proteins and nutrients. PRP contains a high concentration of growth factors and cytokines, which are molecules that stimulate cell growth, differentiation, and repair. PRP is used as a treatment for various hair conditions, such as:

  • Male or female pattern hair loss
  • Telogen effluvium
  • Alopecia areata, characterized by sporadic hair loss due to autoimmune reactions,
  • Traction alopecia, a form of hair loss resulting from prolonged pulling or tension on the hair
  • Scarring alopecia, a type of hair loss caused by inflammation or injury to the scalp

PRP is administered by injecting it into the scalp at the areas of hair loss or thinning. The process is conducted within the premises and typically lasts for approximately one hour. It is usually repeated every 4 to 6 weeks for 3 to 6 sessions, depending on the individual response and the severity of the hair loss. The results of PRP may vary from person to person, but most people notice an improvement in hair density, thickness, and texture after 3 to 6 months.

Eyebrow Restoration

Eyebrows are an essential feature of the face, as they frame the eyes and express emotions. However, some people may have sparse, thin, or missing eyebrows due to various reasons, such as:

  • Overplucking, waxing, or threading
  • Aging, hormonal changes, or menopause
  • Medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, alopecia areata, or eczema
  • Medications, such as chemotherapy or immunosuppressants
  • Trauma, burns, or scars

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your eyebrows, you may benefit from eyebrow restoration, a procedure that restores the natural shape, density, and color of your eyebrows. There are two main methods of eyebrow restoration:

  • Eyebrow transplantation entails extracting hair follicles from the rear of the scalp and relocating them to the eyebrow region. The transplanted hairs will grow and blend with the existing eyebrow hairs, creating a natural and permanent result. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes about 2 to 4 hours. The recovery time is about 7 to 10 days, and the final result is visible after 6 to 12 months.
  • Micropigmentation, which involves tattooing tiny dots or strokes of pigment to the eyebrow area, mimicking the appearance of individual hairs. The pigment is matched to the natural eyebrow color and applied with a fine needle. The procedure is done under topical anesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours. The recovery time is about 3 to 5 days, and the final result is visible after 2 to 4 weeks. The result is semi-permanent and may fade over time, requiring touch-ups every 1 to 2 years.
