Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people of all ages and skin types. It can cause pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammation on the face, chest, back, and other areas of the body. Acne can also affect your self-esteem, confidence, and quality of life.

At Kaveri Karhade MD Dermatology, we understand how frustrating and challenging acne can be. That's why we offer a variety of services and treatments to help you achieve clear, healthy, and beautiful skin. Whether you have mild, moderate, or severe acne, we have a solution for you.

Active Acne

Active acne refers to the presence of active lesions, such as comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. These lesions can be painful, red, and inflamed, and can lead to scarring and infection if left untreated. Active acne can be caused by various factors, such as hormones, genetics, stress, diet, and bacteria.

To treat active acne, we use a combination of topical and oral medications, such as antibiotics, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and azelaic acid. These medications work by reducing inflammation, killing bacteria, unclogging pores, and preventing new breakouts. We also perform extractions, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion to remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and impurities from the skin surface.

Acne Laser

Acne laser is a non-invasive procedure that uses light energy to target and destroy acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and stimulate collagen production. Acne laser can improve the appearance of active acne, acne scars, and enlarged pores, as well as smooth and rejuvenate the skin texture and tone.

We use the latest and most advanced acne laser technology, such as fractional lasers. These lasers are safe, effective, and suitable for all skin types and colors. The procedure is quick, painless, and has minimal downtime. You can see noticeable results after a few sessions, depending on the severity of your acne and your skin condition.

Hormonal Acne

Hormonal acne is a type of acne that is influenced by hormonal fluctuations, such as during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Hormonal acne typically affects the lower face, jawline, chin, and neck, and can be persistent and resistant to conventional treatments.

To treat hormonal acne, we use hormonal therapies, such as birth control pills, spironolactone, and metformin. These therapies work by regulating the levels of hormones, such as androgens and estrogen, that can trigger acne. Hormonal therapies can also help with other symptoms of hormonal imbalance, such as irregular periods, hair loss, and weight gain.

Body Acne

Body acne is a type of acne that occurs on the body, such as the chest, back, shoulders, arms, and buttocks. Body acne can be caused by the same factors as facial acne, such as hormones, genetics, stress, diet, and bacteria. However, body acne can also be aggravated by friction, sweat, clothing, and environmental factors.

To treat body acne, we use the same medications and procedures as for facial acne, such as antibiotics, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, extractions, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. We also recommend using gentle and non-comedogenic cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens, and avoiding tight and synthetic clothing that can irritate the skin.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin, also known as Accutane, is a powerful oral medication that is used to treat severe and recalcitrant acne that does not respond to other treatments. Isotretinoin works by shrinking the oil glands, reducing the amount of oil and bacteria on the skin, and preventing new breakouts. Isotretinoin can also improve the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Isotretinoin is a highly effective medication that can clear up to 80% of acne cases. However, isotretinoin also has some serious side effects and risks, such as dryness, sun sensitivity, birth defects, depression, and liver damage. Therefore, isotretinoin is only prescribed by a board-certified dermatologist after a thorough evaluation and consultation. Isotretinoin also requires monthly blood tests and pregnancy tests, and enrollment in a special program called iPledge.

Acne scars

Acne scars are the result of damage to the skin caused by acne inflammation. Acne scars can be categorized into two groups: atrophic and hypertrophic. Atrophic scars are depressed or sunken scars that occur when the skin loses collagen and tissue. Hypertrophic scars are raised or thickened scars that occur when the skin produces excess collagen and tissue.

To treat acne scars, we use a variety of techniques, such as laser resurfacing, microneedling, subcision, fillers, and surgery. These techniques work by removing, remodeling, or replacing the scarred tissue, and stimulating new collagen and elastin formation. Acne scar treatment can improve the appearance, texture, and color of the skin, as well as boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Fungal Acne

Fungal acne, also known as pityrosporum folliculitis, is a type of acne that is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin. Fungal acne can look like regular acne, but it usually consists of small, itchy, and uniform bumps that occur on the forehead, chest, back, and upper arms. Fungal acne can be triggered by humidity, sweat, antibiotics, steroids, and immunosuppression.

To treat fungal acne, we use antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole, fluconazole, and itraconazole. These medications work by killing the yeast and preventing its recurrence. We also advise using antifungal shampoos, washes, and creams, and avoiding products that contain oils, fatty acids, and esters that can feed the yeast.
